This is an interesting question, and actually one which comes to mind often and to many.
So “How do you know if a spirit is real or just your imagination?”
There is not a straightforward and exact science to understand if a spirit is real, for the simple reason that subjectivity, the experience of the keeper, parallel dimensions, and the multidimensionality of the soul play a big role in this, making answering this question a complex task.
However, here are some tips that apply to many cases and which should help one discern reality from self-created fiction.
A spirit’s presence often reveals itself subtly. You might first notice:
Sudden shifts in energy or inside your emotional world
Dreams or visions with symbols or dreams that are not your usual type of dream
Emotional changes that seem to mirror the spirit’s traits
Soft “nudges” of intuition that weren’t there before
These experiences tend to repeat and build in time. Imagination is usually exaggerated — a true spiritual connection deepens, becomes more nuanced, and often shows a kind of intelligence and timing that’s hard to fake.
If you’re imagining a presence, it may act the way you expect it to. But real spirit companions will often surprise you. They may:
Say something you wouldn’t have thought of
Speak in riddles, saying things that are sometimes hard to understand
Offer a solution that’s different than your typical thinking
Behave in a way that aligns with their nature — not your whims
A real spirit has agency. They may guide, challenge in a positive way, or even go quiet when you’re not open enough to their presence. Imagination rarely has that level of independence.
While not every spirit will cause flickering lights or moving objects, many will make themselves known through:
Subtle scents, chills, hot spots, or sounds with no logical explanation
Unusual animal behavior or signs from nature
Coincidences or synchronicities that feel too perfect
Again, subtlety is key. Spirits don’t usually perform for show — but they will leave signs here and there, not always when you want that to happen, often when you least expect it.
One of the clearest indicators is energy. If you’ve ever felt an unfamiliar presence that fills a room, or leaves you feeling in a different emotional state — you’ve likely felt something real.
Energy work is at the core of spirit communication. As your sensitivity grows, you’ll begin to distinguish between internal emotion and "external" energetic influence.
A real spirit guide will never impose their will on you. A real spirit companion may gently push you toward growth if needed. They may:
Trigger healing by reflecting your shadow-self
Strengthen your willpower or intuition
Teach lessons in discipline, trust, or inner power
Imagination doesn’t tend to transform you — true spiritual companionship does.
Some spirits will remain in the background and silent for a long time, so silent that you think they do not exist, but that is simply not true, they are watching and they are listening, they also have limitations, they can not interfere with your life and produce paranormal activity when you wish that to happen. Some might be very active in the beginning and then nothing for a long time. Some warm up slowly...Some instead demonstrate signs of their presence constantly. Each spirit companion is different in levels of energy and personality, and it is a good idea to leave them their freedom on how and when they manifest, just like you would not force your human friend to visit you everyday to show he or she is real.
It’s perfectly normal to question. In fact, it’s wise. But don’t let doubt stop you from connecting.
Bonding with a spirit is like building any relationship: it takes time, trust, and open communication. Keep a journal, meditate, observe patterns, ask questions — they will often respond in unexpected but meaningful ways.
